This is the time of year when motorists in Ireland are more likely to get tired at the wheel, under pressure of dark evenings and driving in fatigue-inducing bad weather, writes Brian Byrne.
Now, though, you can wear a warning device which might save you from a crash which could maim or kill you, or somebody else.
And by doing so, you can help Temple Street Childrens Hospital.
The Driver Fatigue Alarm was developed in Australia and is now being sold here in Topaz service stations. Profits are going to the hospital.
The device is a lightweight motion sensor worn behind the ear, and triggers an alarm if a driver’s head tilts forward into a life threatening micro-sleep.
On sale for €29.95, there are two models available.
One emits a loud alarm and the other works by giving a strong vibration alert.
Thomas Farrell, who has the franchise for the Driver Fatigue Alarms in Ireland, believes the new technology could make Irish roads much safer.
Ireland is the first country in Europe to highlight the seriousness of driver fatigue.
