Dempsey: No tolls on national routes 'anytime soon'

Friday, July 30, 2010

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has not ruled out imposing tolls on national routes, but said he did not expect them to be introduced "anytime soon".

Mr Dempsey was speaking at the opening of the new tunnel under the River Shannon, where motorists can bypass Limerick by paying €1.80 per car.

Tolls have so far only been introduced on roads where there is a free alternative route.

Minister Dempsey said he was reluctant to move away from that model, but added that the Government was looking at a proposal to widen the introduction of tolls.
